What is Alexa?

Alexa, or also known as Amazon Alexa, in an AI or a virtual assistant created by Amazon. It is used in Amazon Echo Dot speakers and Amazon Echo, which are both developed by Amazon Lab126.

On the other hand, the Amazon Echo is the one who allows you to connect with Alexa. It’s a smart speaker and you can do a lot of things with it. Through the Amazon Echo, you can command Alexa to make to-do lists, stream podcasts, voice interaction, play audiobooks, music playback, and provide sports, traffic, weather, and real-time information, including news. It also uses itself as a home automation system to control several smart devices. Other than that, it can also create shopping lists. Yes, shopping lists. But, how?

If you don’t have an idea on how to create a shopping list on Alexa, we’re here to help. Here’s the step by step guide for you.

Create a Shopping List Using Voice Commands

There are two methods of creating a shopping list using Alexa: using the Alexa app and using voice commands. Here’s how to make a list using voice commands:

 1. Command Alexa to create a list by simply saying “Alexa, create a list”. When Alexa receives the command, she will ask you the type of list that you want her to create.

 2.  Tell Alexa what list should be made. She’ll then ask you to confirm. Once you’ve confirmed the type of list, Alexa will ask you what items should be put on the list.

Remember that when saying each item on your list, you should make a pause between each item so Alexa can put it on the list properly. If you say each item without a pause, Alexa will add all these items as one.

If you want to add more items to your shopping list later, you can also command Alexa to do it. Just say “Alexa, add (name of the item) to (name of your list)”. To view the shopping list created by Alexa, just go to the Alexa app. Click Settings and look for the Lists in the menu. Go to the Your List Name option.

Create a Shopping List Using Alexa App

If you don’t want to do the voice command method in creating a shopping list, you can use the Alexa app instead. Here’s how:

 1. On your computer or smartphone, open the Alexa App.

2. Look for the menu button and tap it. It is the hamburger-shaped icon on the Alexa app.

3. Choose Lists on the menu.

4. On the Lists menu, select Create List.

5. Make a name for your list. Tap the plus (+) button or the Add button afterward.

Once your list is done, it will be easier for you to just add or remove items in it. You can use either the Alexa app or voice command to do it.

Manage the Alexa Shopping List

The shopping lists you’ve created can also be managed by using either the Alexa app or the voice commands. You can mark the items you’ve already bought as complete, add new items, or delete items that aren’t needed. For the voice command, you can say:

“Alexa, what is on my shopping list?”

“Alexa, remove (name of the item) to my shopping list.”

“Alexa, clear my shopping list.”

“Alexa, add (name of the item) to my shopping list.”

Manage your shopping list by using the Alexa app is applicable as well. Here’s how:

If you’re using the Alexa app, you can mark or choose some items that are already been completed, delete the entire list, or remove the items that aren’t needed anymore.

Order on Alexa

If you don’t want to go out and just buy the items listed in your shopping list online, you can also use the help of Alexa to order some of the items. However, this depends on your eligibility and your location. Also, remember that before placing an order on Amazon using Alexa, make sure that you have set up your voice purchasing.

Fulfill the following requirements listed below so you will be able to order some of the items on your shopping list on Amazon using Alexa:

  • You must be a member of Amazon Prime
  • Your payment method set up and shipping address must be in the United States
  • You must have an account on Amazon
  • You must also have the app named Prime Now if you want to buy Whole Foods groceries. Take note that Prime Now app is only available to selected cities.
  • Amazon 1-click set up is also required

Here’s the step by step guide on how you can order items to Alexa:

 1. Give a voice command telling Alexa the items that you want to order. You can say, for example, “Alexa, order coconut oil.” Simply state the number or quantity of each item that you want to buy if you like to order two or more of each.

Alexa will also automatically suggest the items that you’ve bought on Amazon before. If you’re a first-time buyer, on the other hand, she will suggest items under Amazon Choice, which are currently on sale, best seller-items, or deals.

2. If you’re ready to make an order, just say yes to Alexa when she asks you on each item. Items will be added to your cart when you say yes.

3. State the shopping authorization code or your PIN when Alexa asks or requires you to give it. Alexa will process your order once everything is verified from your end.

Voice purchasing is required when you order using Alexa but you don’t have to worry because once your Alexa device is registered, the voice purchasing setup will be enabled automatically.

If you don’t want the voice purchasing’s default settings, you can also customize it. All you have to do is open your Alexa app. Look for the Settings section, tap it, go to your Alexa Account, then tap Voice Purchasing.

Whether you get a sudden craving for chocolates or candies or you run out of ingredients while cooking in your kitchen, you can easily add any items on the shopping list that Alexa created. There’s nothing more convenient than the assistance of Alexa.
