The email address you used to register with LinkedIn can be seen by your direct connections by default. In other words, they will be able to view your primary email address if your direct connections connect their account with approved services and services, such as Outlook. People who are your email contacts will also see your primary email address and vice versa.

Other than that, you need to allow LinkedIn to access your primary email if you want to import contacts. This will break your privacy because other people will know your primary email. Some of these people might be cybercriminals, looking for ways to hack data. That is why you should keep your emails private when you are importing contacts. Here’s how.

 

Exporting your contacts

What you should do is to get all the contacts from your email account and export them. After that, import them into your LinkedIn account. The step by step guide on exporting contacts depends on which email provider is used. But, you don’t have to worry because all the steps are simple and easy to do.

 

 1. Exporting from Hotmail

  • Open your browser.
  • Go to Outlook People.
  • Look for the Manage option at the top. Click its dropdown.
  • Choose Export Contacts from the dropdown menu.

  • You can either choose pre-selected contacts on a different folder or choose the All Contacts option to export the whole contact list.

  • To start the file download, click the Export button.
  • Sometimes, the browser will require you to select a destination to navigate or to download your CSV files to a folder. Just click the Save button to proceed.

 

 2. Exporting from Yahoo

  • Open your browser.
  • Go to the Inbox of your Yahoo Mail.
  • To open the list of contacts, click the Contacts icon.
  • Click the menu button on the right. It has three horizontal dots.
  • Then, select the “Export CSV” option to start downloading your contacts.

  • Sometimes, the browser will require you to select a destination to navigate or to download your CSV files to a folder. Just click the Save button to proceed.

 3. Exporting from Google Account

  • Open your browser.
  • Go to Google Contacts.
  • Look at all your contacts and select which ones should be exported.

  • In the panel located on the left side of the window, click the Export button.
  • You don’t have to pre-select any contacts if you want to export all of them. Just simply click export on the panel.

  • Choose the Outlook CSV option under the “Export As” menu.
  • After that, click the Export button located at the bottom right part of the window.

  • Sometimes, the browser will require you to select a destination to navigate or to download your CSV files to a folder. Just click the Save button to proceed.

 

Importing the Contacts to LinkedIn

  • Once the CSV file with all your contacts has finished downloading, open your browser.
  • Go to LinkedIn and log in to your account.
  • Then, choose the My Network option.
  • From the panel on the left side, select the More Options button.

  • Look for the Upload icon. It looks like an arrow that is pointing upwards to an open box.

  • A file upload prompt will open when the next page loads on your screen.
  • Go to the exported CSV file. Click the Open button to open the file full of contacts.

  • Once you’ve chosen the CSV file, choose the Upload button.

  • A list of all your connections that use LinkedIn will appear on the next screen. Check the box to select connections or select manually who you want to connect with.

Then, click the Add Connections button.
