You can always use your phone or tablet’s internet data as a hotspot if you are not at your home or you’re in a place where there is no WiFi available. Mobile hotspot or portable hotspot is a feature of a smartphone or other portable device that provides access to the internet on different kinds of devices. It converts the cellular network signals of either 3G or 4G into a Wifi signal.

It functions just like how USB modems work, depending on the broadband service of your mobile device. Mobile hotspots can connect any device that is Wifi-enabled and allow two or more devices to access the internet at the same time. It will help you spare the battery charge of your phone and avoid the use of all the data plan on your phone.

But, you should call your phone provider first before using your mobile data as a hotspot because it can eat up too much data if left unattended. Make sure that your data plan is capable of sharing the internet connection with many hotspot users. Once you’ve confirmed that it won’t eat up all your data when used as a mobile hotspot, it’s time for you to set it up. But, how? Here’s a step by step guide.

 

Hotspot Setup on iPhone

If you have an iOS device such as an iPhone and you want to use it as a mobile hotspot, here’s how you can set it up:

 1. Look for the Settings app on your iPhone or any iOS device. When you buy an iPhone or an iPad, a Settings app is already preloaded in it. It’s a gear-shaped icon. Tap it.

 2. On the Settings menu, tap Cellular and go to the Personal Hotspot option on the menu.

 3. You will see a toggle on the right side of the Personal Hotspot option. Slide it to the right to turn on. A green light will appear, which signals that your personal hotspot is now active.

 4. Enter your password once the name of your mobile hotspot appears. Usually, the default name of your mobile hotspot is the model and brand of your device and the default password of it is numbers. You can change it anytime you want so that no other mobile devices around you can connect to your own hotspot.

 

Hotspot Setup in Android

If you have an Android device such as Samsung, LG, Motorola, or Huawei, and you want to use it as a mobile hotspot, here’s how you can set it up:

 1. Look for the Settings app on your Android phone or tablet.  When you buy an Android device, a Settings app is already preloaded in it. It’s a gear-shaped icon. Tap it.

 2. On the Settings menu, tap the Network and Connectivity settings option on the menu. Each type or brand of an Android device has a different description for this.  For :

  • LG – the network and connectivity settings option is under Tethering.
  • Samsung – the network and connectivity settings option is under Connections.
  • Huawei – the network and connectivity settings option is under Wireless & Networks.
  • Google Pixel and Motorola – the network and connectivity settings option are under Network & Internet.

 3. Once you’ve found the network and connectivity settings on your Android phone, open the Hotspot & Tethering option, which can also be found as Tethering & Portable Hotspot on other Android devices.

4. Click the Portable Hotspot option on the menu.

 5. You will see a toggle on the right side of the Portable Hotspot option. Slide it to the right to turn on. A green light will appear, which signals that your personal hotspot is now active.

 6. Enter your password once the name of your mobile hotspot appears. Usually, the default name of your mobile hotspot is the model and brand of your device and the default password of it is numbers. You can change it anytime you want so that no other mobile devices around you can connect to your own hotspot.

Quick Tip: To quickly access the Hotspot menu, you can simply turn your mobile hotspot on by swiping the top of your phone screen down and select the Mobile Hotspot on the drop-down. However, this depends on what type of device you have because not all devices have it.

 

Hotspot Setup on Mac

If you have an iOS device such as a Mac and you want to use it as a mobile hotspot, here’s how you can set it up:

 1. At the top-left corner of your Mac screen, click the Apple icon.

 2. Look for the System Preferences in the drop-down menu. Click it.

 3. In the System Preferences menu, select the Sharing option.

 4. The Sharing screen will appear. Look for the Internet Sharing option on the menu and click it. It’s located on the lower-left side of the screen.

 5. Once done, choose an internet connection from the drop-down option that says “Share your connection from”. It is recommended to use or choose the iPhone USB. But if your Mac is already connected via Ethernet, you can choose it.

 6. Another option will appear after, the ” To computers using” option. Choose Wifi when this option appear. By clicking on the Wifi button, you can choose to configure the mobike hotspot of your Mac. When you’re done, click OK.

 7. To turn on the mobile hotspot, click the box again on the Internet Sharing drop-down.

 8. You can begin sharing your connection to other devices when a pop-up appears. Just click start in the Pop-up.

Click Wifi options if you want your hotspot settings to be changed again. It is located in the System Preferences window, at the bottom-right corner. From there, you can change the name of your Wifi network and set a password as well.

 

Hotspot Setup on Windows PC

If you have a Windows PC and you want to use it as a mobile hotspot, here’s how you can set it up:

 1. At the bottom-left corner of your PC screen, you will see a Windows logo-shaped button. It’s the Windows start button. Click it to begin setting up.

 2. Click the Settings on the Windows menu. It’s a gear-shaped icon, located at the top of the power icon.

3. Look for the Network & Internet option on the Settings menu. Click it.

 4. At the left-side bar, look for the Mobile Hotspot option. Click it to proceed.

 5. Once done, you can choose the typr of connection that you want to share on other devices. It will depend on the type of connection your Windows PC has.

 6. From the “Share my Internet Connection over” list that will appear, select Wifi as your type of connection.

 7. Slid the toggle of the “Share my Internet Connection with other devices” to turn it on.
